Man's association with birds has always been peculiarly intimate, if one-sided. He has worshipped them, used them as symbols in his art, hunted them for food and plumage. Yet, after all this exploitation, man has found time to admire, study and conserve these amazing creatures.

Kwazulu-Natal, and in particular, the Weenen / Colenso area, has been blessed with an abundant bird life. Umsuluzis' includes a pair of breeding Blue Cranes, Ground Hornbills, Bald Ibis and the rare Painted Snipe. These are amongst the 250 plus bird species recorded in the area. The park is conveniently situated in a transitional area comprising Valley Bushveld and Drakensberg zone thus creating a variety of habitats.

Set out on an open Land Rover and explore the reserve armed with ones binoculars and bird book, for it is said, "to join a bird guide on safari is to enter the big league of obsessive pastimes."

Let the cry of the African Fish Eagle or the call of the Crested Barbet heighten your senses and energise your soul.

"Birds that fly...They have skeletons that are light but strong, muscles that are powerful but not a burden, feathers that conserve heat while providing lift and propulsion, and have the sharpest eyes in the entire animal kingdom." - Roger Tory Peterson
